The backs of large fish threw knots in the water whenever they greedily gulped at the surface at anything that fell in. They were hungry. Winter was over and it slowly was thawing into Spring. There was still snow in the ground in the arbors. The brave trees protected that last taste of winter, as if they hated to be warm and green. Already, deer picked at the low branches, plucking buds before they unfurled into tender leaves.
The female wolf was tan. She had a white muzzle and deep brown eyes that gave her a sweet expression. Her legs were long and her dark-green tipped tail wagged from side to side as she moved at an easy pace. Slower than a lope, faster than a walk. Her ears were flicked forwards. Her horns swept backwards to make an elegant profile. She stopped. Wolves don't hunt deer alone. Too much risk.
However, this was a lake. There was bound to be some wolf coming in for a drink. It was the most reliable body of water in this half of the land. Eliza sat down in the cool grass. She saw a few of the does alert to her, but then resume feeding, a wary eye on her. Their wariness was uncharacteristic for them. But then, Zee saw new fawns suckling at the teats of one of the does. Oh, so they were already here. The young fawns. She smiled at the thought of new life. It was so… sweet. Dark paws left light prints in the snow; just by looking at the prints, one could see that the lightly charcoal-painted male was going at an easy, lazy pace. His tail hung at his hocks, head lowered slightly, even with his shoulders. His fur was smooth, recently cleaned by the long pink tongue that hung loosely from creamy grey jaws. Eyes - one clouded and dull, the other a deep amber - moved in the male's skull, his single seeing eye - the left one - taking in the surroundings. He had to move his head further to the right in order to see more clearly, but this had little effect on him. Being blind from birth, the wolf known as Zombie - a name that didn't really fit him - hardly even thought of it. Being blind in one eye was the same as someone who could see. It was natural for him, and honestly, he didn't mind it so much.
He continued his lazy walk, reaching the large, rather popular body of water. Surrounding it, he spotted a small herd of deer. They were alert as they ate, watchful. Zom tilted his head slightly, dark ears pricking forward curiously. His single seeing eye searched around the little group of does, before he managed to sight a few little fawn. His long, grey tail moved from side to side as he thought about the family, and the fact that Spring had finally descended on the land. He shook his black coat; his thick winter fur had already begun to fall out in clumps, so it wouldn't be long before he didn't appear quite so... fluffy.
With new vigor, the wolf continued at a slightly faster rate, trotting around the liquid. The deer moved away, but otherwise saw no threat in the loud display; it was clear that this blackened wolf was not hunting yet. He reached the edge of the liquid life support, leaning over to lap at the frigid water. Ice was still seen, but it was no longer smooth and hard. Instead, it had begun to melt away, leaving it cracked, with several little ice "lands" floating around. As one of these drifts of ice nudged the young male's coal-colored nose, he lifted his head, peering at the thin sheet of frozen water. Licking the drips from his muzzle, he raised a black paw and gently pressed it to the ice, watching with an odd interest as it sank under the weight of his paw. The icy water licked at his pads, causing the male to shiver slightly as the exposed skin captured the chill. Despite the cold, however, Zombie lifted his paw only to bring it down again. For whatever reason, he found great pleasure in sinking the ice.
After a few more times of pressing the frozen liquid below the surface of the water, the wolf seemed to lose all ability to think as he gave a yip before leaping onto the small icy land. Being unable to support the heavy male, it sank immediately, sending him into the icy waters, as well as causing a splash. Fish swam away immediately, and any deer darted off to the other side. Zombie's head poked back up to the surface, and his shook it, black ears flopping against his cheeks. He swam back to the shore, pulled himself out of the water, and shook. Fat drops of water were sent all around, pelting the soil around him. Perhaps his lapse in judgement could have been forgiven; after all, he had never really been raised to be an intelligent thinker, and fun was the only thing he enjoyed, so this act of seeming puppyish play time might have been okay. If he didn't do it a second time. As soon as he found another thin patch of ice, the black and grey wolf pounced again.

She raised her head when another wolf approached. Since he approached through the tree's side, where the sun had yet to touch, his shape was conspicuous--dark on top of the soft snow. Eliza stayed where she was, close to the greening grasses near the lip of the lake, trying to keep herself hidden from the male wolf. He ambled around the body of water with a free and casual movement. Like her, he wasn't hunting yet. However, he moved close and pushed the deer around the lake. They went the same speed he did, obviously not alarmed by him, just apprehensive about his proximity, especially with new babies around.
Then, Zee watched as he dipped his paw in the lake. She wasn't at a good angle to see that he was playing with the little islands of ice still left on the surface. Each was shrinking because of the fast approaching Spring. She lowered herself further when she thought that he had seen her. But a smile crossed her white muzzle. She rather liked this wolf. His antics looked a bit random, but she tended to enjoy wolves like that. Then, he readied himself for a jump and pounced in the water, a dramatic splash coming around him as he sank under the water.
That made Zee stand up. She had a bit of a motherly side: Sweet and kind and generous. To see a wolf just jump into a lake like that, she just wanted to make sure he was okay. She jogged near to where he'd emerge. Finally, a sopping wet wolf crawled out of the lake. He shook and she got all wet. Well, she could have thought that through better because now the both of them were damp, though she could have swore that she was wetter than he was now. The female smiled at herself though. Idiot! she said in her mind. However he hadn't noticed her and jumped in the lake again. Perhaps he was too focused on the task.
"Wait!" she called out. Too late. He was already in.
She wondered what was so fun about jumping in the lake. She tilted her head, before looking around to make sure nobody would judge this stupid decision. Zee then backed up a few feet before sprinting into the lake and leaping gracefully. She didn't land gracefully, however. As she was in mid-leap, she regretted her decision as there was a lot more ice in the lake than she estimated and, well, she was trying to turn back while still in the air. She awkwardly turned and landed with her feet spread out like a cat and the water punched at her stomach as soon as she crashed through the surface.
Under the water she was cold and her horns made it a little heavier to swim. She kicked her legs under water, mostly using her forelegs as canines tended to do. She broke the surface with a gasping breath. She doggy paddled to the edge of the lake. Her eyes were wide and, allowed, mostly to herself, she asked, "How did he do that!?"
It wasn't that the feat was impossible. It was just that she so impossibly failed at it and didn't see what he was truly doing--leaping on islands of ice that floated on the surface of the lake. If she had been redirected to play the game that he was playing, then she would have had the satisfaction of success and falling into the water would have been a mild annoyance. She was still wet, her fur in stringy clumps. "Oh yeah, I'm still wet," Zee thought aloud. She shook her fur, sending a shower of water.
The deer were watching and Zee believed that if they had the mind to, they would have been laughing at her. But at least the male did the same thing right? The water soaked into his coat, nipping at the skin beneath the thick fur. Zombie shivered slightly, feeling the icy chill that came. From beneath the surface, he caught the sound of another creature plunging into the cold depths, and he swam quickly to the top of the water. Once his head had poked through the water, his single amber eye set about looking around for the source of the other splash. As he watched, bubbles formed, before a green nose followed by a light tan head emerged. Zombie's amber eye watched as she swam quickly to shore and pulled herself out, giving her pelt a shake. Charcoal ears pricked forward curiously, his legs slowly pushing him toward the other wolf.
While most - more intelligent - wolves would have proceeded with caution, Zombie felt a surge of happiness. Someone else had joined in his game, and he hadn't even had to ask! His legs propelled him to shore faster, and he climbed out so he was standing next to the tan-colored wolf. The water drenched his fur, causing it to cling to his body so he appeared sleek, instead of fluffy with his winter fur. He angled is head so that his right eye would be able to watch the other wolf. Giving his tail a slight wag, he practically yipped like a young pup, "Hi! My name is Zombie," his words were filled with the bright happiness that one would commonly expect from a puppy. It would be quite difficult to call Zom an adult, though he never worried about his pup-like antics. You only lived once, after all.
After waiting for her response, Zom fell into a crouch, ears still pricked forward, eyes alight with happiness. His tail continued to wag like that of a dog, though it was steadily increasing in speed. Almost as soon as he crouched, the black and grey wolf jumped up again, spinning around in his excitement at the new-found friend. Jumping closer, he brushed his nose against one of her horns, "Wow, I've never seen anyone with horns before!" he chuckled slightly, a bubbly, childish sound; again, not something one would expect from a wolf over the age of three. After exclaiming his excitement over her horns, Zom sat, still very close to the tan she-wolf.

He kept his right eye cocked on her, so that the angle of his nose wasn't directly on her. Zee knew that he was watching her. In that moment, under his scrutiny, she squirmed. What if he was some insane wolf? What if he fruitlessly jumped into the freezing lake over and over again because he wasn't right? Or, perhaps he would judge her? What if he had seen her long before she arrived and came when he was ready to trick her? Well, that didn't matter. She'd still give him a chance. She softened after a moment of unease. When he started wagging his tail, she startled, jumping backwards a little. Zee hadn't expected that. Then, he introduced himself with the energy of a puppy.
Zombie. The name seemed to be a misnomer. He seemed hyper, pleasant, a bit puppyish. Not like some violent, brain-dead creature that stumbled around without so much as an ounce of personality or soul. No, he seemed overly passionate. And it summed up in Zee's head in one, glorious thought: I like this.
"I'm Eliza," she said quickly, quietly, in a barely there introduction. Then, he touched one of her horns with his nose. She couldn't feel it since he lightly brushed against it. Her horns were colored like bones, but darkened by the weather and the fact that life still ebbed and flowed inside of them. She ducked her head in a tiny movement to ensure that he understood that she didn't want anyone touching them without her permission. They were precious to her--as precious as an assassin's tools of the trade. She knew how to fight. How to use her horns. However, when she turned her head to the wolf who had just found amazement in nothing but the fact that she had horns, she smiled. She couldn't kill him. That seemed unfair.
He bubbled with energy and goodwill. It left a good impression on her. It put fizz in her nose. Delightful, kind of ticklish, like drinking a bottle of soda. Sweet. He parked himself next to her. Her tail wagged alongside his. Twin drumbeats.
"Call me Zee. And, I can show you how I use these horns." She said, introducing herself in a more friendly, certain manner. Her submissiveness was still in her tone, but his childishness made her feel a bit more confident, more at ease. She raised her head and gestured toward the deer with a small motion of her head.
The does kept to themselves. "They're expecting us. It makes it…" Challenging? She smiled as she tossed that adjective. No, it made it, and she voiced her thought, finishing the sentence, "Fun." She smiled and looked to him. "Whaddaya say? Two wet wolves in for some wild hunt? There's no better way to get to know someone else." She was honest, her eyes sparkling. She played his game. She hoped that he'd play hers. She wanted to impress him. All that he had seen her do was get wet after a jump in the lake. A stupid jump in the lake.
